The Long Goodbye

In the 1950s, a New York City corner serves as the backdrop, the two buildings are interspersed with alleys. The alley is blocked at the end by a chain-link fence, with trash scattered on the ground, and the cityscape visible beyond the fence.
The two houses outside the randomly hung all kinds of iron frame signs, this is the scene of the crime, the detective followed the clues to this place, the murderous moment is about to happen.

Background

A bar downstairs from the detective's place hosted a party. Attendees included the detective, the sheriff and his wife, and the bar owner and his wife. That day, the detective's kitten, refusing to eat the newly bought cat food, ran from the window, triggering a series of events...

Character introduction

Detective

A detective moving through the shadows of the city, mysterious and elusive. He follows his own principles, handling matters before collecting his payment. Danger is only an accessory to his work, his true goal is always the truth hidden behind appearances.

Detective's room

On the bookshelf, alongside the books, are some personal items of the detective. The cat bowl on the floor is poured full of cat food, but the cat is nowhere to be found. A calendar board hangs on the wall, keeping track of the days when the kitten was lost, and when his best friend left. On the table were photos of the detective and the sheriff, who seemed to be really good friends. 

Acquaintance at a wine party

The detective wanted to go to look for kittens but was invited to the bar party and met his former good friend Sheriff Terry here. Terry's wife is the daughter of the local media mogul, also invited to the party. At the reception, the boss's wife recognizes the sheriff as her lover who hadn't returned from the war more than ten years ago, but both sides have already started their own families, and only a few pleasantries are exchanged.

The death of the sheriff's wife

The next evening the detective went out to look for the cat but was told that Terry killed his wife and fled. The moody detective came to the bar to drink, the boss's wife said that the boss last night after the party went out and did not return, asked the detective to help look for. Detectives intend to help find the boss first, and the cat on the way. Following the clues to a nearby alley, he finds the remains of his friend's wife...

Death of the Boss

After discovering the body of his best friend's wife, the detective follows the footprints to the end of the alley, where a chain-link fence blocks the way. Various kinds of garbage are scattered around the trash can in front of it; Abandoned phone booths looking unusable; Blood vaguely hidden under broken wine bottles spreading to the sewer well. The detective sees the dead boss in the sewer. 

Sewer clues

A sheriff's warrant is taped to the drain in front of the sewer. In addition to the dead bar owner, there are discarded liquor bottles and roaming rats in the sewers. On the far wall is the clue “She didn't have me in her heart” written in blood by the bar boss. But the detective doesn't understand why he wrote it ......

The truth comes out

The detective comes out of the sewer and meets the Bar owner's wife standing on the rooftop and the revamped sheriff. The Bar owner's wife reveals what happened, exposes the sheriff's veil for the detective, and then shoots herself.

Final Farewell

The Sheriff bids farewell to his former friend. The detective recovers the lost kitten and shows that he has drawn a line in the sand with the corrupt darkness.
